Sparta is a restaurant and coffeeshop located in a historic diner in Downtown Newark, Ohio serving freshly prepared traditional American comfort food since 2012. Our breakfast and lunch menu are available throughout the day or for carry out. Our coffee is direct-trade from Central America farmers. Highlights of our menu include classic breakfast selections, fried chicken and waffles, burgers and sandwiches, grilled veggie salad, vegetarian and vegan, fruit smoothies and espresso bar. Three things make Sparta unique. 1)We focus on freshly prepared, locally-sourced produce, meats, dairy, and baked goods. 2)This historic downtown location with its preserved architectural features has become a magnet for social entrepreneurs and people with a passion for their community. 3) We are a business of Project Main Street providing employment and job training to community members in need. What that means is diners enjoy a rare experience in a welcoming, diverse environment surrounded by people making a difference in their community while enjoying a good meal or cup of coffee. But the real benefit is in knowing good food never did so much good in the community.

Its TONIGHT folks! The Sparta Farewell Event is from 5pm to 9pm at Thirty One West (31 W Church St, Newark). Hope to see you there. PS, there is free parking available at the lot across the street. Please share - as is the tradition of the Sparta, everyone is invited and welcome.
SPARTA FAREWELL EVENT You are invited to join in a celebration and thank-you event for the Sparta staff and the community for their years of dedication and service to Newark, Ohio. The event will be the first event held at the newly renovated Thirty One West (Crystal Ballroom). For a small donation, those attending can select a piece of Sparta memorabilia. Thirty One West is located at 31 W. Church Street in Newark. The building is actively being renovated and is not handicap accessible at this time. The ballroom donated for this event is on the second floor and only accessible by the original grand staircase, although it is beautiful the steps are narrow and steep. BASIC DETAILS WHEN: Friday, Sept. 30, from 5 to 9p.m. WHERE: 31 West (the former Crystal Ballroom), upstairs at 31 West Church Street, downtown Newark ADMISSION: Free, free will donations accepted. All guests will be provided with a FREE vintage Sparta candy box. Additional boxes may be purchased for $5 each. GOAL: To raise funding for Sparta closing costs. All funds raised over that amount will be paid to Sparta employees who were laid off. ENTERTAINMENT: Common Thread will perform from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of The Sparta restaurant. Unfortunately, due to the challenges caused by construction in downtown Newark, we are unable to continue to build on the momentum of the last six months. We have tremendous gratitude for the support of our community, generous donors, and dedicated staff. Members of the Project Main Street Board of Directors, charged with operating The Sparta, will take the next six months to evaluate its options and plan for the future.

A wedding party came in for a pre-wedding breakfast! What a great group of people.
It was great to see all the friendly faces during the Final Friday chocolate walk Friday night! The cool evening made a hot drink sound good. We learned that visitors overwhelmingly wanted whipped cream on their freshly-steamed hot chocolate. That's the way it should be, right?
THANKS TO YOU, PHASE ONE IS COMPLETE! WE VOTED WITH OUR WALLETS AND OUR APPETITES: “YES! SAVE THE SPARTA!” Last month we began our campaign to Save the Sparta. The campaign has three phases: 1) Pay off old debts; 2) Purchase and upgrade the building; 3) Assure Sparta’s financial stability while we improve our food and service, build the business and weather the anticipated challenges associated with the downtown street construction this summer. Our February fundraiser was a resounding success. We paid off all our debts and made significant progress toward the building fund. Thank you, Patrons, for this great vote of confidence. The Sparta is now owned by a community based non-profit board of directors, Project Main Street. It is run by and for the community. In the last month, patrons have been making new suggestions that we are implementing. Please fill out the comment cards on the tables so that we can continue to improve how we serve you. We remain steadfast in our mission, providing entry level, and re-entry level employment to disadvantaged folks, meeting space for church, business and community organizations, training and internship opportunities for high school students, and meals for those in distress. We are aiming to upgrade our upstairs meeting space so that we can be even more effective in our mission. WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! We need you to continue to eat at the Sparta and bring your friends. We need you to put up with limited parking and construction obstacles, so that the bright new face of Newark that will emerge will include a vibrant sustainable Sparta. We need you to continue to tell us how we might improve. And we need your donations to successfully accomplish Phases 2 and 3. Click the "Donate" tab at the top of this page. SAVE THE DATE Join us on April 7th at 7pm The Friends of the Sparta organization is planning another community support campaign event. On April 7th, at 7pm people from many communities will gather at the Sparta to celebrate our accomplishments and again vote to support us through this upcoming period of challenges and opportunities. The Sparta is now owned by a community non-profit organization. The President of the Project Main Street Board will talk about our fundraising progress, our purchase and upgrade of the building and our future plans. Restaurant Manager Tina Cole will explain how we are using your suggestions, improving the food and service at the restaurant. You will have the opportunity to tell us what YOU think about saving and improving the Sparta. This will be an excellent opportunity to bring your friends, church fellows, and business associates so they may discover the Sparta family as we join together to make Newark a more neighborly place to eat, live and work! Please make plans to join us at the event. Admission is free. Light snacks will be served including our HOMEMADE bread and cinnamon buns. Spring is when our beautiful Ohio countryside blooms more vibrantly than ever. First the snowdrops, daffodils and crocuses. Then the willows, red bud, dogwood. And the Sparta.
We will be CLOSED on Easter Sunday to observe the holiday. We will reopen normal hours on Tuesday!
